Missouri State junior guard Dequon Miller (Charleston, W.Va.) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Monday.
In the first week of conference play, Miller averaged 15.5 points per game and extended his double-figure scoring streak to a team-best eight straight contests. He notched a team-high 17 points at Illinois State last Wednesday with three 3-pointers and followed that with 14 points and 4 assists against Evansville on Saturday at JQH Arena. He has converted at least five field goals in three straight ball games for the Bears.
The transfer from Motlow (Tenn.) College is just the third Missouri State player to win MVC Newcomer of the Week three or more times in the same season. Anthony Downing won the honor four times in 2011-12 and Adam Leonard won it three times in 2009-10. The weekly award for first-year MVC players began during the 2003-04 season.
Miller has started all 14 games for the Bears this season and is averaging 12.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest with 42 assists and a team-high 22 3-pointers.
The Bears will look for their first MVC victory of the campaign Wednesday when they wrap their two-game home stand at 7 p.m., against Northern Iowa. Tickets are available at MissouriStateBears.com/tickets or during regular office hours at the MSU Athletics Box Office at JQH Arena, (417) 836-7678.
