SBU men lose for sixth time in last seven games

Kearney, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist University men’s basketball team fell at the hands of Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday evening 85-64. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 9-12 (4-11 MIAA) on the season.

UNK opened the contest up with five straight points before the Bearcats were able to get on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws from Kalehl Brown, followed by a Brown layup, as SBU trailed 5-4 with 17:32 left in the half. SBU continued to hang around with UNK, and an Andy Campbell three put SBU down two (15-13) with 13:02 left in the half. After a Campbell free throw cut the Lopers lead to one (18-17), UNK used a 13-0 run as the Bearcats trailed 31-17 with 5:32 left in the half. The Bearcats slowly started to chip away at the lead, using a 15-6 run to pull back within 5 (37-32) with 1:08 left in the half. However, UNK ended the half on a 5-0 run as SBU went into the break trailing 42-32.

In the second half SBU was the first to score on a Logan Hovey jumper to cut the deficit to eight (42-34), but the Lopers slowly started to build their lead. The Bearcats and Lopers continued to exchange baskets as SBU would eventually fall 85-64.

Andy Campbell led the way offensively for the Bearcats with a career high 16 points, while Kalehl Brown had 15 points and Logan Hovey chipped in 12. As a team SBU shot 36.4% from the field, 40.0% from beyond the arc, and 69.2% from the free throw line.

SBU will return to action on Saturday, February 6 when they travel to Fort Hays State. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. from Hays, Kansas.
