Homecoming at Monett featured an emotional recognition for a pair of special needs students at the school.
Sophomore Meg Young was given a standing ovation after being named to the homecoming court.
And Juan Agustin, the long-time manager for the boys basketball team, got to live out a dream by getting a chance to play in the game itself.
Juan got to warm-up with the team, was introduced as a member of the starting line-up, and then had a specially-designed opening play designed just for him with the cooperation of the East Newton players. The special needs senior needed several opportunites to make his bucket, but he scored the game's first points and was pulled from the game to a rousing ovation from the crowd.
Afterwards, Juan said he was "not nervous" and happy he didn't commit any fouls while he was in.
Among the many fans witnessing the moment was Payton Woodrum, a Mt. Vernon volleyball player who had met Juan through a friend and traveled to Monett to witness Juan's big moment. She said "he's never met a stranger" and was "the sweetest person you'll ever meet."
Angela Johnson, Monett's special needs teacher, said it was a very memorable moment for both Meg and Juan. She said she was not surprised by the standing ovations given to both students. adding, "we want to give encouragement to all our students and make them feel welcome at our school. No matter who you are."
