OZARK – Quincy pulled away late for a 10-7 victory in the opener, then followed that with a 5-1 win over the Panthers in the nightcap to sweep Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from Drury on "Pack The Park" Day at U.S. Baseball Park.
The Panthers fell to 13-22 overall and 5-9 in the GLVC, while Quincy improved to 24-8 and 9-5 as a crowd of 1,245 watched the doubleheader, the second weekend of play for Drury at the refurbished U.S. Baseball Park, formerly Price-Cutter Park.
The teams will finish the four-game GLVC set with a noon doubleheader on Sunday at USBP.
In Saturday's nine-inning opener, Quincy scored three runs in the ninth to pull out of a 7-all tie and claim the 10-7 triumph.
Drury led 4-0 after two innings, but the Hawks tallied four in the fourth off DU starter Ryan Colombo to pull even. Quincy went up 6-4 with two in the sixth, but the Panthers answered with two in the bottom of the frame. They traded single runs in the eighth for the 7-all tie before Quincy strung together four hits for three runs off DU relievers Alex Austin and Sterling Sharp.
Mason McCarville went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs to lead the DU offense, while Matt Hilmes had four hits and four RBIs for Quincy.
In the seven-inning nightcap, Quincy scored twice in the second for all the offense it would need to back the pitching of Brandon Ley (4-0) and Cole Crawford, who combined to allow the Panthers just six hits and one run.
Spencer Wilmes went 2 for 3 to lead DU.
Luke Burnidge (2-6) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and five runs in the complete-game effort.
