The Jonesboro Hurricanes defeated the Mountain Home Bombers, 8-1, Friday afternoon at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. to win the Arkansas 6A state baseball championship.
Neither team scored until Jonesboro plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth.
The Hurricanes then added two in the fifth and four in the sixth. Mountain Home did not score until the top of the sixth. Ryan Czanstkowski led off the inning with a double, then a ground out and a sac fly brought home the Bombers’ only run.
Jonesboro lefty Skyler Boyle went the distance and gave up just three hits.
“He keeps us off balance and we were way out in front of him,” said Mountain Home head coach Jim Tejcek. “We were trying to preach ‘Go the other way, go the other way.’ We were just way out in front of it a little bit. Those pop ups and ground balls we wanted to turn into line drives, and that’s what we were doing all year. He just had us out in front of our front foot. Credit to him.”
For the Hurricanes, it is their second state title in four years.
“Our kids never quit,” Tejcek said. “They never quit from the beginning of the year. They kept plugging away. [I am] just proud of what these seniors have brought to this team and continue to build what I want to build in Mountain Home. It’s just been a fun ride this year with these kids.”
