Missouri State alums Sam Perez and Spencer Johnson signed their contracts and are reporting to their teams, their agent Brian Lumley confirmed.
“They’re both excited to get everything started,” he said.
Perez, a relief pitcher selected with a fifth round pick, will start his minor league career on the Miami Marlins’ short-season Class A league team, the Batavia Muckdogs. Their season begins tonight.
Johnson will report to the Greenville Astros and play in the Appalachian League this season, which is considered advanced rookie ball. The Houston Astros took the middle infielder in the 16th round.
Joey Hawkins, another former Baseball Bear who the Cardinals selected last year, also plays in the Appalachian League, and will line up against Johnson when the league schedule starts next week.
