Springfield, MO – The Texas League has announced that Springfield Cardinals RHP Luke Weaver has been named the Texas League Player of the Month for June. On Monday, Weaver was also named the St. Louis Cardinals June Minor League Pitcher of the Month.
Weaver becomes the first Springfield Cardinal to win a Texas League Player of the Month award this season, and first since 3B Patrick Wisdom claimed the honor for June, 2015.
Weaver, 22, dominated the Texas League through his five starts in June, going 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA and helping Springfield capture the 1st-Half North Division Championship. Weaver made his Double-A debut on June 5 in Frisco and promptly set a career high with 10 strikeouts in 7.1 scoreless innings, earning the Texas League's Pitcher of the Week Award.
The DeLand, Florida native followed his debut with consecutive one-run performances, including a career-high 8.0 innings of shutdown work on June 16 in Northwest Arkansas that sparked a five-game winning streak to help propel Springfield to the 1st-Half Title. Overall this season, Weaver has gone 4-1 with a miniscule 0.96 ERA through six starts, allowing just four earned runs through 37.1 innings while striking out 42 and walking only six.
A 2014 1st-round pick of the Cardinals out of Florida State University, Weaver entered the season ranked by MLB.com as the Cardinals #3 prospect and tabbed by Baseball America as the Cardinals #4 prospect.
