SPRINGFIELD — Former Missouri State baseball standout Buddy Baumann became the 17th Bear to receive a call up to big leagues Friday when the San Diego Padres made the move official by promoting the Rogersville, Mo., product to their 25-man Major League roster.

Baumann, a 2009 All-American for the Bears, signed a big league free agent deal with the Padres this past winter before posting a 1.06 ERA over 17 innings pitched this season with the El Paso Chihuahuas, San Diego's Triple-A affiliate. Over his eight-year professional career, the left-hander has amassed a 20-16 record to go along with 15 saves and a 3.09 ERA over 212 appearances.

Prior to being selected by Kansas City in the seventh round of the 2009 MLB Draft, Baumann went 18-8 with a 4.09 ERA over his three-year Missouri State career, striking out 215 batters innings to rank among the school's all-time leaders. He earned second-team All-America honors from the ABCA and Collegiate Baseballafter going 11-1 with a 3.23 ERA as a junior in 2009.

Baumann also becomes the first Bear to receive a Major League promotion since Scott Carroll's call-up by the Chicago White Sox in May 2014. The 28-year-old is the 12th Bear to crack a big league roster in the last 14 years and the 14th MSU player overall to reach the majors under current head coach Keith Guttin.
