Springfield, MO – RHP Austin Gomber dealt seven one-hit innings to help pace the 1st-Half North Division Champion Springfield Cardinals to the 1-0 shutout win against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals before the sellout crowd of 6,799 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday evening. It marks the second straight sellout crowd at the ballpark.
Making just his second start in Double-A and his first since his Springfield debut on July 9, Gomber (W, 1-0) dominated the Naturals (18-18, 47-59) from the outset. He allowed just one hit, a single in the second inning, and walked only two through his seven shutout innings, striking out three along the way.
While Gomber was dealing, the Cardinals (16-20, 57-49) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning against RHP Yender Caramo (L, 2-5). 1B Luke Voit singled to lead off the frame, before going to second on a groundout. One out later, CF Blake Drake chopped an RBI single through the right side, scoring Voit from second base to lift the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.
Gomber kept the one-run lead intact through his seven stanzas, before the Cardinals received scoreless relief. RHP Corey Baker retired two outs around a single and a walk in the eighth, giving way to LHP Justin Wright for the final out of the frame. RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 9) then took over for the top of the ninth and managed around a leadoff single, retiring the next three in a row to close the 1-0 shutout win for the Cardinals.
