Taste of the Town: Andy’s, Glendale

SPRINGFIELD — The Glendale Falcons are 2-0 for the first time since 2011 and on Friday they host West Plains (1-1) in our KSPR Game of the Week.

The Falcons have tallied 114 points over the first two weeks against Joplin and Hillcrest and look every bit of dangerous in their third campaign in Mike Mauk's scheme.

"We've trained hard enough to where we can compete with (West Plains) and have a good lead on them with our offense. Plus, our defense has improved a lot this season," senior lineman Darrius Broocks said.

The Zizzers defeated Glendale 71-58 in the high-scoring game either side played in 2015. West Plains is coming off a loss to Camdenton, but have shown themselves to be a tall task to handle with 83 combined points entering Week 3.

"I don't even think they've had to punt against us in the last two years," Mauk said. "That's going to be a tremendous challenge defensively. We're probably going to lean on our offense a lot because you're not going to shut a team like them down."

This high-octane Glendale attack is a new tradition in Springfield, but to give the Falcons a competitive outlet before Friday, Mauk brought 15 seniors to one of the Ozarks' most-beloved mainstays: Andy's Frozen Custard.

The dessert haven first opened at Lake of the Ozarks in 1986, but the inaugural location in Springfield began business less than two miles from Glendale High School a year later.
We broke the Falcons down into groups of three and tasked them with creating their own Concretes. They got points for a unique name, ingredients, and presentations.

Of course, it was left to the coaches to be the taste-testers.
