Evangel volleyball beats Avila in conference opener

The Evangel University volleyball team took a 3-0 win Tuesday night in its Heart of America Conference opener against Avila.

The Crusaders were pushed in each match taking 27-25 wins in set one and two. However, Evangel finished with a .344 hitting percentage in the third set to close out the Eagles for the 25-19 win.

Jorie Garrett led the way offensively with 12 kills while Brianna Justis posted a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.

Defensively, Jackie Fugate added 20 digs for the Crusaders.

Avila was led by Laurel Dehn who finished with nine kills and seven digs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE                     
– The 3-0 sweep was the second straight for Evangel and fourth this season. 
– Jackie Fugate tallied a season-high 20 digs this season. Fugate currently ranks second for the Crusaders with 2.6 digs per set and 146 total digs.
– The Crusaders posted 37 kills and a .198 hitting percentage in the match, the second highest mark in a three set match this season.
– Brianna Justis earned her 12th double-double of the season with 17 assists and 10 digs.

UP NEXT
Evangel takes the rest of the week off as they continue conference action next Tuesday at Benedictine. Action is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Atchison, Kansas.
