The Reeds Spring Wolves (5-1) are in the driver’s seat to win their first ever COC Small title. This after beating rival Bolivar for the first time since 2002 earlier this season, snapping the Liberators 65-game conference winning streak.
“That was the game we wanted to win since we were tiny, playing pee wee,” said senior lineman Jacob Rantz.
Third year head coach Lance Gosch acknowledged how huge the Bolivar win was, but urged his team to keep battling each week; doing what they’ve done all year.
“We’re not flashy,” said Gosch. “We’ve had a lot of guys step up big this year. We’ve had some injuries and guys have stepped up each week and gotten the job done.”
Despite the loss of senior runningback Keenan Haynes to injury in the first game of the season the Wolves and their flexbone offense have averaged 39 points per game.
The Wolves have just three more steps to an undefeated COC Small season and district top seed. While those final three opponents all have losing records, Class 4 Marshfield (2-4) offers a challenge this Friday in the KSPR Game of the Week.
In order to prepare for the big game, we met up with a half dozen Wolves seniors at Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant for this week’s Taste of the Town.
Tequila’s has been a Tri-Lakes favorite for 10 years now. Since setting up shop a decade ago owner Alejandro Campos has been supporting the Reeds Spring schools, and on this day he fed the Wolves everything from fajitas and nachos to the hot and spicy Chile Colorado and their slow-cooked carnitas.
Campos and his team work together to serve the Tri-Lakes community just like the Wolves team up to win football games.
“I think relying on each other is a big thing, especially with the offense we run,” said Haynes. “Every play there’s three guys that could get the ball. It’s hard to read, so relying on each other would be a good thing.”
So, whether it’s the flex bone or the sizzlin’ fajitas, this duo is red hot.
“We’re on fire right now. Just keep winning.”
So we know they’re hot, but can they take the heat? Check out the video to see how the Wolves handled the “Jalapeno Challenge”.
