Mizzou falls to Kentucky for fourth straight defeat

(Missouri Sports Information) COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football fell to 2-6 on the year and 0-4 in SEC play after Kentucky earned a 35-21 win on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats pounded out 582 yards of total offense and converted 10-of-18 third downs en route to the win. Mizzou got a pair of touchdowns from WR Dimetrios Mason (Loganville, Ga.) and a third from FB Josh Augusta (Peoria, Ill.). Both now have two career scores.

Kentucky struck first on a 60-yard sprint to the endzone by Stanley ‘Boom’ Williams, giving the Wildcats an early, 7-0 advantage. UK appeared to be driving again, but Donavin Newsom (St. Louis, Mo.) forced a Williams fumble, recovered by Charles Harris (Kansas City, Mo.), to stall the drive. The first quarter ended with UK on top, 7-0.

Another big play, this time on third down, staked UK to a 14-0 lead after QB Stephen Johnson found Jeff Badet for a 65-yard strike over the top. The lead was extended to 21-0 with 8:46 remaining in the second quarter after a one-yard TD plunge by Benny Snell.

Mizzou cut into the lead late in the second quarter as Drew Lock (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) scrambled on third-and-11 and found Mason on a 27-yard strike down the right sideline for his first career score. That cut the lead to 21-7 heading into intermission.

On its first possession of the second half, Mizzou drove all the way inside the UK 10-yard line, but the drive stalled forcing a 24-yard field goal attempt, which was missed. Kentucky took the ensuing possession and went 80 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 13-yard TD pass on a screen play to Williams. That gave UK a 28-7 lead with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter.

Mizzou scored with 10:03 remaining in fourth quarter after a 63-yard punt return to the one yard line by freshman Johnathon Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.) set up a plunge by Augusta, good for his second career rushing TD. Mason capped the scoring less than six minutes later on a one-play heave from Lock to cover 57 yards.

The Tigers head to Columbia, S.C., next Saturday for a 3 p.m. (CT) kickoff against South Carolina, and return home Nov. 12 vs. Vanderbilt.
