Evangel sets records in HAAC Tournament opener

SPRINGFIELD – The Evangel University volleyball team earned a hard fought 3-1 victory over Clarke Thursday night in the First Round of the Heart Postseason Tournament.

Senior Morgan Kensinger helped lead Evangel as she broke the all-time blocks record in the win. Kensinger added nine blocks to give her 739 career blocks and eclipsing Brittni Harris’ mark of 737 set from 2003-06.

Another record was tied Thursday night as Allie Dunton-Moss finished with 47 digs tying her own single-game record set earlier this season against College of the Ozarks. Evangel finished with 110 digs as a team while also recording 25 blocks.

On the offensive side of the net Evangel was able to stay one step ahead of Clarke as Heather Gahm finished with 16 kills to finish with a game-high. Sandy Mohr tallied 12 kills as well in the win.

Clarke was led by Lindsey Steger with 16 kills and a .226 hitting percentage.

Evangel advances to the Heart Quarterfinals on Saturday where they will take on MidAmerica Nazarene in Olathe, Kan. The Crusaders edged the Pioneers in last year’s championship match, 3-2. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
