SBU women narrowly miss comeback win at Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist University women’s basketball team hung with Division I Nebraska until the very end, but a last second potential game winning three wouldn’t fall as the Bearcats lost 73-71.

Nebraska came out strong to open the game, taking a 6-0 lead before the Bearcats responded with a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 9-8 with 5:20 left in the first quarter. After Nebraska re-took the lead on a jumper, SBU answered back with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to a game high six (16-10) before taking a 16-12 lead heading into the second quarter.

SBU held a lead for nearly four minutes into the second quarter before the Huskers re-took the lead. A back-and-forth affair started before Nebraska ended the first half on a 10-0 run as the Bearcats went into the break trailing 40-29.

In the second half Nebraska quickly pushed their lead to game high 17 (48-31) with 6:48 left in the quarter before the Bearcats responded. SBU would limit the Huskers to only two points for the remainder of the quarter, as the Bearcats ended the third quarter on a 14-2 run to pull back within five at 50-45.

Nebraska continued to hold a minimal lead for a majority of the fourth quarter and led by seven (73-66) with 39 seconds remaining. SBU connected on a three, followed by a bucket after a pair of missed free throws. The Bearcats then forced a turnover, but the shot at the buzzer wouldn’t fall as SBU would end up dropping the exhibition contest 73-71.

Megan Rosenbohm had a team high 19 points with 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 assists while Alex Botkin chipped in 18 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Bearcats will open up the regular season on Friday, November 11 when they host Henderson State in the SBU Classic. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
