BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – A big second half by the 2nd-ranked Baker Wildcats saw the Evangel football team fall, 46-13, in the regular season finale at Liston Stadium in Heart action.
The Crusaders were able to hang tough with nation’s second-ranked team in the first half. After both teams traded punts, Evangel took the first lead of the game on a 27-yard field goal from Derek Roberts after the Wildcats missed a 45-yard field goal of their own. The field goal gave Evangel an early 3-0 lead with just over four minutes left in the first quarter.
However, Baker responded with a four-play drive that took just 54 seconds to take a 7-3 lead in the game. Adonis Powell scored Baker’s first touchdown on a 25-yard run as the Wildcats would not relinquish its lead.
The Wildcats added to their lead just before halftime after using a short field as Cornell Brown scored from 13-yards out. Brown finished with two touchdowns and 153-yards on 21 carries for Baker.
Senior Blake Woodard finished 23-of-46 for a season-high 333-yards passing. Woodard added a late touchdown pass to Noah Pierce, his 14th of the season, as Pierce also finished with a season-high eight catches for 223 yards.
The Evangel defense was led by Devon Overall who finished with 10 tackles and 0.5 tackle for a loss. Josh Evans also added two sacks to finish the season with 12.5 and rank fourth most in a single-season.
Evangel finishes its season 4-7 overall and 2-3 in Heart action while Baker completes its first undefeated regular season in school history at 11-0 and 4-0 in the Heart.
