Jeff Weseloh (SBU Sports Information) Bolivar, Mo. – SBU’s Logan Hovey produced his first double-double of the season to lead the Southwest Baptist University men’s basketball team to a 72-60 victory over Central Baptist College on Tuesday. With the win, SBU improves to 3-2 on the season.
The Bearcats jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead to open up the contest. A Brian Patterson layup opened up the scoring, followed by back-to-back layups from Logan Hovey and capped off by a layup from Patterson, as the Bearcats forced a CBC timeout. SBU and CBC exchanged buckets over the next three minutes before the Mustangs cut the Bearcat lead down to three at 12-9 with 13:49 remaining in the half. The Bearcats continued to hold a small lead, never leading by more than six points, before the Mustangs eventually took a 26-24 lead with 4:36 left in the half. SBU promptly responded with a Kai Woodfall three to re-take the lead as part of a 9-0 run as the Bearcats went back on top 32-26 with 2:04 remaining in the half. After a Cartree Pettis extended the lead to seven, the Bearcats would eventually go into the half with a 35-31 lead.
SBU continued to hold a small lead, and after a pair of free throws by CBC, Louis Baltazar connected on a three to push the Bearcat lead back to seven at 44-37 with 15:59 remaining. The Mustangs reeled off four straight points, but Baltazar once again connected on a three to give SBU a six point lead. After a layup from CBC, Cartier Dean hit a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Patterson as the Bearcats held a 52-43 lead with 12:24 to go. Central Baptist chipped away at the SBU lead, cutting it to two at 54-52 with 8:08 remaining in the contest. After SBU pushed their lead to four, the Bearcats used a 5-0 run off a pair of free throw from Hovey and another three from Woodfall to take a 64-55 lead with 3:26 remaining. CBC came back with a bucket, but another big three from Woodfall extend the Bearcat lead to double-digits at 67-57. The Bearcats would hit free throws down the stretch as they would go on to claim the 72-60 victory.
Logan Hovey produced his first double-double on the season with 12 points and a team high 12 rebounds in the victory. Brian Patterson had a team high 15 points with 9 rebounds, while Cartree Pettis had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Kai Woodfall gave the Bearcats 12 points, hitting three three’s, while Cartier Dean was also in double-figures with 10 points off of the bench. As a team SBU shot 47.1% from the field, 28.6% from beyond the arc, and 58.1% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Monday, November 28 when they host William Woods. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
