Southwest Baptist picks up fifth win in non-conference blowout

Jeff Weseloh (SBU Sports Information) Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University men’s basketball team would pick up an easy win in a non-conference matchup against Williams Baptist 89-63 to improve 5-2 on the season.

The Bearcats opened play trailing the eagles with a score of 5-2 within the first minutes of the game. But free throws from Brian Patterson would tie the game. Back and forth scoring between the Eagles and the Bearcats would finally come to an end when back-to-back layups by Logan Hovey pushed the score 9-7 with 16:21 remaining in the half. The Eagles would try to answer pulling the score within 1, but were unable when a pair of Cartree Pettis free throws and back-to-back layups from Hovey would propel a 16-10 lead with 13:40 left in the half. The Bearcats would continue to lead the first half with some dominate inside play by Patterson to push the score 23-15. The Bearcats would lead by as much as 10 in the first half making use of their inside and outside game with three pointers by Matt Ridder, Andy Campbell, and Kai Woodfall. SBU would head into halftime leading the eagles with a score of 42-35.

SBU started the second half with a pair of free throws from Hovey. Layups and free throws would continue to propel the Bearcats in the second half as they would lead 52-42 with 16:48 left in the second half. Without answer the Eagles would continue to trail the bearcats as a Karim Mouliom dunk would send the score 65-45 at the 11:46 mark. A Cartier Dean three pointer would later send the Bearcats up to a score of 70-47 with 10:22 left in the game. SBU would continue to hold their lead throughout the remainder of the game as they continued to push the ball inside after a layup from Theo Oghide would push the score 85-53. The Bearcats would finish the night against the Eagles with a score of 89-63.

Brian Patterson led the bearcats in scoring with 20 pts. Kai Woodfall went 4-4 from behind the arc for 12 pts, while Cartier Dean would rack up 6 assists on the nights contest.

The Bearcats will return home to open conference play Thursday December 8th against Central Oklahoma. Tip-off is set for 5:30 from the Meyer Sports Center.
