SPRINGFIELD – The Evangel University men’s basketball team pulled off an upset of No. 13 Grand View, 88-81, Saturday afternoon in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
Richard Chapman made three free throws after being fouled on a three-point shot with 1:40 left in the game to break a 79-79 tie. Chapman was one of two Crusaders to finish with more than 20 points in the win tallying 21.
Evangel showed toughness as they continued to get stops and limit offensive looks for Grand View over the final two minutes of the game. After a pair of free throws from Chase Mullen pulled the Vikings back within one point at 82-81, Cody Geiger drove the lane to score to put Evangel back on top for good with 1:22 left in the game.
Geiger finished with a game-high 25 points as the junior went 10-of-11 from the field and pulled down six boards. He also was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line helping Evangel shoot 71 percent as a team.
The Crusaders out-rebounded Grand View 36-33 and shot 53 percent from the field to help seal the win. Evangel also recorded a season-high 22 assists as Dylan Bekemeier finished with 10 assists and seven points. Nick Yocum also finished in double figures for the Crusaders adding 15 points.
Grand View was led by Kerry Green who scored 20 points off the bench. Jjuan Hadnot added 19 points and six boards as well.

Evangel will step outside conference play as they head to California for the Assemblies of God Classic hosted by Vanguard University. The Crusaders will play host Vanguard Thursday at 11:30 p.m. (CST) before closing tournament action against Shephard College on Friday.
