Warrensburg, Mo. – Logan Hovey gave the Southwest Baptist University men’s basketball team a season high 27 points on Saturday afternoon, but the Bearcats would fall 87-66 at Central Missouri. With the loss the Bearcats fall to 6-4 (1-2 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats were the first to score in the contest off of a layup from Brian Patterson from Cartree Pettis to take the early 2-0 advantage. SBU extended their lead to four (7-4) with a Logan Hovey three, and another three from Hovey with 12:16 left in the half gave the Bearcats a 10-7 lead. The lead went back-and-forth before the Mules used a used a 5-0 run to push their advantage to 8 with 6:51 left in the half. The Bearcats responded with an old fashioned three point play from Hovey, a layup from Pettis, and a jumper from Hovey to cut the deficit to one at 25-24 with 5:24 to go. SBU kept within an arms length of the Mules, but UCM slowly pushed their lead up to 10 as the Bearcats went into the break trailing 41-31.
SBU cut the deficit back to single digits off of a free throw from Patterson, and back to nine once again (44-35) off of a three from Hovey with 18:25 remaining. However the Mules slowly built their lead during the second half as the Bearcats would eventually fall 87-66.
Logan Hovey had a game high 27 points to go along with 7 rebounds, while Cartree Pettis added 14 points in the loss. As a team SBU shot 41.7% from the field, 27.8% from beyond the arc, and 65.6% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, December 29 when they host Kansas Christian College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
