KEARNEY, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist University men’s basketball team fell on the road at Nebraska-Kearney 79-65. With the loss SBU falls to 8-5.
The Bearcats opened up the game against the Lopers on a 5-0 run, using a three from Brian Patterson and a layup from Cartier Dean to take the early lead. After a bucket from UNK, Dean connected on a three to give SBU their largest lead of the game at 9-3. Nebraska-Kearney answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game, as neither team led by more than six for the remainder of the first half. With UNK leading 35-29 with 2:41 remaining, the Bearcats used a 9-0 run to close out the half leading 38-35.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the second half, as the two teams traded leads for the first five minutes of the second half. The Bearcats trailed 50-47 before using a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Logan Hovey hit a jumper, followed by a three from Kai Woodfall, and a free throw from Kalehl Brown to give the Bearcats a 53-50 lead with 15:13 remaining. However, UNK used a 10-0 run, as the Bearcats were unable to overcome the deficit as SBU would fall 79-65.
Brian Patterson had a team high 15 points to go along with 6 rebounds, while Cartree Pettis added 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Logan Hovey chipped in 13 points and Andy Campbell had 10 points in loss. As a team SBU shot 44.7% from the field, 50.0% from beyond the arc, and 57.1% from the line.
SBU will return to action on Saturday, January 7 when they travel to Fort Hays State. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. from Hays, Kansas.
