Fair Grove, MO – The McDonald County Mustangs took home the top team prize at the 4th annual Fair Grove Powerlifting Meet on Saturday at Fair Grove High School.
Over 180 student athletes from 10 area schools competed in the meet. The athletes were divided into 12 separate weight classifications, including a girls’ division. McDonald County finished with 48 team points, followed by Glendale (43) and Marshfield (41).
Fair Grove track and field coach Mark Talbert was pleased with the high turnout this year.
“As far as today compared to previous years, it’s been incredible just how many more athletes have showed up who are getting involved in it and are taking it seriously,” said Talbert. “There are an overwhelming number of kids that want to get involved in lifting weights and doing power lifting meets.”
Lifters in each division competed in three lifting events: squats, bench press and dead lifts. Each participant had three attempts to lift as much as they could for each event.
The participants’ best lift from each event was combined to make a “total weight” score. The total weight was divided by the participants’ body weight to determine a lifter’s “strength index.”
McDonald County earned first place in four weight divisions, more than any other school at the meet. Glendale’s Nader Leali was voted the Top Overall Lifter at the meet. He lifted a combined total weight of 1,155 pounds with a body weight of 159.4 pounds, producing a strength index of 7.25 – the most of any participant.
