Southwest Baptist women can’t find offense against Fort Hays State

Jeff Weseloh (SBU Sports Information) Bolivar Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Women’s Basketball team fell to Fort Hays State on Thursday night. Following the loss SBU drops to 15-12 (7-11 MIAA).

Morgan Henderson would start the game with a free throw and a layup to give SBU a 3-0 lead with 8:53 left in the 1st quarter. Fort Hays State would respond with an 11-2 run, Mackenzie Skupa would get hit back-to-back jumpers and cut the FHSU lead to 11-9 midway through the 1st quarter. FHSU would respond with a layup, then Taylor Jackson would respond with a three making the score 13-12 in favor of Fort Hays. Two quick buckets from the Tigers would give them a 17-12 lead, but Skupa would respond with a 5-0 run of her own to tie the game at 17. Fort Hays would take a 21-17 lead into the 2nd quarter.

Fort Hays would start the 2nd quarter on an 8-0 run giving them a 29-17 lead; Aliyah Isaac would get an old fashioned three point play to make the Hays lead 29-20 with 4:31 left in the half. FHSU would end the half on a 14-6 run and would take a 43-26 lead into the half.

The 3rd quarter would start out with a Henderson jumper and an Alex Botkin three pointer which would cut the FHSU lead to 43-31. FHSU would go on a 19-7 run before Caylee Richardson would hit a buzzer beater to end the quarter. Fort Hays outscored SBU 11-8 in the 4th quarter and won the game 74-48,
SBU was led in scoring by Mackenzie Skupa with 12 while Aliyah Isaac pitched in 8. Skupa also paced the Bearcats with 7 rebounds while Caylee Richardson and Kameron Schaaf each had 5.

SBU will be back in action Saturday, February 25 when they host Nebraska-Kearney for senior day. Tipoff is set for 1:30 PM from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar, Mo.
