The Greenwood High School Blue Jays fired a 314, at the Whispering Oaks Golf Course in Marshfield on Tuesday afternoon, to claim this year’s Class 1 – District 2 golf title.
Winning district championships is anything but new for Greenwood. Their victory in Marshfield made it five in a row for the Blue Jays.
Leading the way for Greenwood was senior Tony Brandt. Brandt, who also finished as the tournament’s top medalist with matching 36’s on both the front and back nine 72.
For Brandt the victory was a sweet one.
“I won the district tournament as a sophomore, but last year I didn’t play very well and let it get away,” said the Blue Jay senior. “This year I was just focusing on posting a good score for the team and I was able to that. I feel really good about what I was able to accomplish today.”

Also contributing to the Greenwood effort were Tommy Montileone (76), Jacob Kassing (83) and John Sharp (83).
Especially happy for the Jays was their coach, David Oatman.
“After a slow start this season, due to injuries, our kids are now playing some great golf,” said Oatman. “They’re a strong team, a team that has supported and helped each other all season long. They’ve especially been good about taking the freshman under their wing and helping them to get better each day. I’m really very proud of these kids.”
The Galena Bears finished second at the tournament with a 376. Adam Cunnyngham posted a 76 to pace all Bears. He was joined by Cody Comeau (93), Ronnie Gallion (97) and Hunter Miller (110).
The tourney’s top two teams, plus All-District selections and sectional qualifiers, will move on to sectionals on Monday. The tournament will take place at the Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course.
The tournament, as well as state, has long been on the minds of the Blue Jays.
“We won sectionals last year and tied for second at state,” said Oatman. “We finished third on a scorecard playoff. We left that meet feeling like we had some unfinished business to deal with this year. Our kids are ready to play.”
