This was supposed to be a “rebuilding year” for the Glendale Falcons after losing three talented seniors from last year’s perfect Class 4 state champ team. Instead, three new seniors and a pair of freshman took GHS to the verge of a second straight title. Ultimately the Falcons (613) finished runner-up to Rockhurst by just three strokes Tuesday afternoon at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin.

“It was a very successful year for us,” said head coach Chris Obert. “If you had asked us at the beginning of the year if we had a shot I would say no shot, but these kids have put a lot of work and effort in this year.”

Senior Alex Locke (148), signed with D-2 Maryville University in St. Louis, finished in a tie for second to lead the Falcons. Locke entered the final round in a three-way tie for first place after firing a an even par 72 on Monday. He lost by just two strokes to Chaminade’s Joseph Terschluse (146).

The difference ultimately came down to a two-stroke penalty assessed to Locke on the par 3 11th hole.

“I landed it and it spun back on the mud,” said Locke, whose tee shot landed on the edge of a pond. “I had a good lie, took my shoes off, and then on my back swing I just barely knicked four or five drops of water.”

Locke saved bogey on the hole, but was informed by a MSHSAA official after the hole that he would be given a two-stroke penalty for making contact with the hazard in his back swing.

Knowing the team needed him, Locke went on to birdie the next two holes.

“He’s a very mature kid and he’s a great kid,” said Obert. “I’m very proud of that guy.”

“At the end of the day it’s just a game,” said Locke, who also played soccer and kicked for the football team. “I’m just out here to have fun. It’s my senior year. I just kept on trucking and barrelled through.”

Fellow senior Chase Gafner (153) also earned all-state honors, finishing 14th.

The third senior, Brett Davis (155), stepped up big this season, finishing tied for 19th.

A pair of freshman, Dawson Meek (T-30) and Conner Obert (T-52), were also key additions to the team this year and are expected to be the nucleus for next year.

“It was great to have the experience we had this year, so hopefully they’ll be able to do that next year,” said Obert. “Whether we can fill those spots next year, we’ll have to wait and see. We’ve got the kids willing to put the effort in and if they do we’ll see what happens next year.”

Glendale lost just three events (Kickapoo match, districts to Lebanon and state) all season by a total of five strokes.

The Falcons played this season with a heavy heart after the death of one of last year’s leaders Sam Holmes.

Locke, who spoke at Holmes’ funeral, said the first couple tournaments were tough, but the team found a way to fight through it and play for Holmes.

“I just woke up one morning and thought he’s in a better place,” said Locke. “I’m glad he’s in a better place and we as a team are going to come together and play well.”
