Cards’ prospect Sierra sent to Springfield

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Cardinals LHP Tyler Lyons is scheduled to make a Rehab Start for Springfield at Hammons Field on Saturday, May 20.

Additionally, the Cardinals have announced that St. Louis OF Magneuris Sierra has been optioned to Springfield. He is expected to be in the lineup for Springfield on Saturday, May 20 when the Cardinals take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at 6:10pm. Lyons, 29, has been one of the steadiest southpaws in the St. Louis bullpen since making his Major League debut on May 22, 2013. Through 70 career big league appearances, including 20 starts, he has posted a 7-9 record with a 4.05 ERA, striking out 185 batters through 197.2 total innings. Coming off his first full season in the Majors, Lyons set a career high with 30 appearances for St. Louis in 2016, going 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 48 innings.

The Lubbock, Texas native made 12 starts as a Springfield Cardinal in 2012, going 5-4 with a 3.92 ERA before being promoted to AAA-Memphis and debuting in the big leagues the following year. Lyons was selected by St. Louis in the 9th round of the 2010 June Draft out of Oklahoma State University.

Sierra, 21, took the big leagues by storm after being called up by St. Louis all the way from High-A Palm Beach on May 7, 2017. Sierra hit safely in all seven games that he played for St. Louis, compiling a .367 average (11×30) with eight runs scored and two RBIs.

A native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, Sierra began the season with High-A Palm Beach where he was hitting .272 with three doubles, four triples and nine RBIs in 20 games. He was named the Cardinals 2014 Minor League Player of the Year, becoming the youngest player to win the award at just 18 years old, before leading the entire Cardinals system with 161 hits last year with Low-A Peoria. Sierra signed with St. Louis as a non-drafted free agent on July 13, 2012.
