Kolten Wong to make rehab start in Springfield

Andrew Buchbinder (Springfield Cardinals Media Relations) Springfield, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is scheduled to join Springfield for a Major League Rehab Assignment at Hammons Field this week.

The Springfield Cardinals begin a six-game homestand at Hammons Field on Wednesday, July 5 with the first installment of the Freedom Week Fireworks Series after the game, featuring Patriotic Music. First Pitch on Wednesday is 6:30pm, gates open at 5:30pm.

Wong, 26, is in the midst of a career year with St. Louis, batting .301 with one home run, 15 doubles, 19 RBIs and 23 runs through 47 games this season. In 463 career Major League games since debuting with the Cardinals on 8/16/13, Wong owns a .253 average with 29 homers, 65 doubles, 145 RBIs and 191 runs. A big part of the Cardinals postseason success since being called up, Wong has an extra base hit for his last nine postseason hits, tied for the MLB record with Miguel Cabrera and Jayson Werth.

A native of Hilo, Hawaii, Wong was a member of the Texas League Champion Springfield Cardinals in 2012, hitting .297 with nine home runs, 23 doubles, 52 RBIs and 79 runs in 126 games that year. He then suited up in 107 games for AAA-Memphis in 2013 prior to making his big league debut that season. Wong was selected by St. Louis in the 1st round of the 2011 June Draft out of the University of Hawaii.
