The McAuley Catholic High School volleyball team has a simple goal in 2017, but it will be the foundation of the season.
The Lady Warriors want to improve.
They will look to elevate their game after going 4-19-1 last season following a first-round loss to Pierce City in the Class 1 District 8 tournament.
“Our basic goal is just to have a better record than last year,” first-year coach Amanda Walker said. “Obviously, with new coaches, there are lots of changes, lots of different expectations. We’re just trying to take this first year to really build the program and have a winning record.

“I do know the girls have set personal goals as far as what they achieved last year. That’s all of their main goals is to improve personally and as a team.”
Junior libero Courtney Bates and junior middle Claire Lowry will look to lead the Lady Warriors this season. Senior outside hitters Abby Schiefelbein and Dorothy Ostmeyer will also be relied upon.
Sophomore setter/right side will be a top newcomer.
The Lady Warriors will be assisted by Austin Gripka, another key piece for the program.
“He has an extensive background in volleyball,” Walker said. “He has probably been the key leader in teaching them and helping them. Really we’re relying on him for the knowledge of volleyball.”
