INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Southwest Baptist University football team fell in a tough road contest at #15 Indianapolis on Saturday evening 45-17. With the loss the Bearcats fall to 1-2 (0-1 GLVC) on the season.
In the opening drive of the game the Bearcats used a 12-play 75 yard drive to take an early 7-0 lead. The Bearcats utilized a combination of pass plays and runs, including a fake punt, capped off with an 18-yard touchdown strike from TJ Edwards to JerminicSmith. The Greyhounds answered back with 28 unanswered points as the Bearcats trailed 28-7. With 10:23 left in the half, the Bearcats struck again. SBU again advanced the ball through the air on the ground, as Dominique Lee picked up 11 yards on the ground while Edwards hit Smith with a 12-yard pass to eventually advance the ball within the UINDY ten yardline. However, the Bearcats were unable to punch it in the endzone, as Jordan LeClair connected on a 30 yard field goal to cut the deficit to 28-10. After a UINDY three-and-out, the Bearcats again advanced the ball deep into UINDY territory but were unable to come away with any points as they went into the half trailing 28-10.
In the third quarter the Bearcats began to chip away at the lead. After three straight defense stops by the SBU defense, Edwards connected with Kendrick Payne of the first play of the following drive for an 84-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 28-17. UINDY would respond with 17 straight points as the Bearcats would eventually fall 45-17.
The Bearcats were led offensively by TJ Edwards who threw for 274 yards and a pair of scores, while Kendrick Payne hauled in 134 receiving yards and one touchdown. Defensively Tyler Curts was again in double-digit tackles with a team high 10, while Jonathan Buffin had 9 tackles and a forced fumble.
SBU will return home on Saturday, September 23 when they host Quincy for SBU Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Plaster Stadium.
