Drury pulled away from Southwest Baptist late in the first half outscoring the Bearcats 24-10 on their way to an 89-61 win in the Bank of Bolivar Highway 13 Catfight on Tuesday at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
The Panthers moved their record to 2-0 and dropped the Bearcats to 1-2.
Drury led 21-17 with 8:23 left in the first half when they took advantage of three consecutive SBU turnovers to go ahead by double-digits, 28-17. The Panthers took a 45-27 lead to the locker room at halftime.
“It was a battle of wills early but we were able to keep the full-court pressure on,” said Drury head coach Steve Hesser. “We had some guys make some plays and we were able to make some shots to give us a pretty good lead by halftime.”
The Panthers forced 21 turnovers while only committing eight and outscored the Bearcats in points-off-turnovers 26-0.
John Williams and Kamau Kinder both had 11 points to lead a very balanced Drury attack. Andrew Ballock had 10 points and seven rebounds while Tyler Clanton also had 10 points. Nine different Drury players scored at least seven points in the game.
Marlon Alcindor and Logan Hovey both had 14 points for the Bearcats.
The Panthers shot 49 percent from the field in the game going 35 for 71 and 9 for 24 from three-point range. Drury held SBU to 40 percent from the floor as they hit 19 of their 48 attempts.
The win was Drury’s sixth straight in the series against the Bearcats.
