Monty Johal is the new Springfield Public Schools scoring king after dropping 41 points on Camdenton in an 80-55 win on Tuesday.
The Glendale senior needed two points to tie the record of 2,098 points held by former Hillcrest star Dorial Green-Beckham. He got those baskets early and then kept going to run his career total up to 2,137 and counting.

“Coming in I was just going to play my normal game. I thought I was going to break it. I just relied on my teammates to get me the ball,” Johal said. “I was just going with the flow of the offense. One of my teammates (said) ‘I am going to come out and pass it to you for a three the very first possession.’ I (said) ‘nah, we will go get it within the offense’ and that was what happened. I am just happy I got it.”
Johal’s record-breaking night came on his 18th birthday.
“It is a blessing. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches throughout the years. Especially my teammates, all these years they have been giving me the ball and trusting me. They are a big part of it,” Johal said. “Personally it is a really good feeling and I am honored to have broken his (DGB’s) record.”
Now Johal and the Falcons will focus on the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions and making a run in the Class 5 postseason as he continues to add to his record.
“Monty is going to put a big number up there. We still have half the season to go,” McTague said. “I thought he was just OK tonight and then I looked at the stat sheet and he had 41. That’s just Monty. We are kind of used to it now and he has spoiled us the last couple years with what he can do. Nothing really surprises me anymore with the kind of numbers he puts up.”
Glendale opens up the 2018 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions at 6:30 on Thursday with the defending National High School Champions La Lumiere (Ind.).
