Clark Sheehy, the head basketball coach at Southwest Baptist University, has taken many routes to recruiting. Going overseas is not uncommon, but for the Bearcats, they’re taking world traveler to a whole new level.
“Coach Simmons is an Australian. I played against his brother a few times, so he just sent me an email and said, ‘you want to come to school here?'” said Kai Woodfall, a junior from Australia.
SBU has five players on the roster that aren’t from the United States.
“Our whole roster is kind of foreign – without using the word too loosely. We’ve got a guy from Orlando, Chicago, Texas, so we’re kind of all over the map,” said Assistant Coach Liam Simmons.
The transition of moving to a different country can be tough, but Paris native Karim Moulim says he’s thankful for the opportunity. “I realize it every day how lucky I am to be here and have this experience in the United States. I have a lot of friends that just do regular school at home in France, and they don’t have this opportunity,” Moulim said.
