The Kickapoo girls basketball team is back in the final four for the second time in three years. The Lady Chiefs opened the season without a single starter from the 2016 championship team, and, without a key player.
Jordan Wersinger suffered an off-season injury heading into her senior year at Kickapoo. The All-State player tore her ACL and meniscus, and was ruled out indefinitely.
“Basketball is a huge part of my life, it’s something I love, and for that to be taken away for six, seven months that’s a huge part,” Wersinger said, “It felt like my identity was being ripped away from me.”
Wersinger went through two surgeries and months of physical therapy, and has been cleared in time for the postseason.
“It’s great to have her, and kind of have a second chance, and maybe end your career with a state championship,” said Lady Chiefs head coach Jim Pendergrass.
“It’d be amazing, especially since I didn’t think I’d be able to play, so to come out here and get another state championship, that would be the best ending ever,” Wersinger said.
Kickapoo will face St. Joseph’s Academy for the State semifinal game on Thursday, March 15.
