Bailee Nunn wins national title in 100 Fly, 2nd title of week

GREENSBORO, N.C.– Drury University sophomore Bailee Nunn captured her second national championship this week as the Marshfield native won the 100-yard butterfly highlighting the Panthers second day at the NCAA-II swimming & diving championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Drury women’s team held on to second place in the standings after day two with 213 points. They trail first place Queens (NC) who continues to lead as they finished the night with 297 points. Nova Southeastern is in third with 161.

The Drury men’s squad slipped to sixth after the second day of competition. The Panthers have 128 points. Queens (NC) leads with 296, followed by Indianapolis (161), California Baptist (154), Oklahoma Baptist (150) and Flordia Southern is in fifth place with 138 points.

Nunn, who won the 200 individual medley on Wednesday night, took home a championship in the 100 butterfly as Drury swimmers came in first, second, and fourth in the event. Nunn had a winning time of 53.01 and right behind her was senior Vera Johansson finishing in 53.17. Zuza Chwadeczko (fah-DETCH-coe) was fourth with a time of 53.50.

The Drury women’s team got a second place finish from their 200 freestyle relay team as the Panthers and Queens had their second hotly contested relay race in this year’s national championships. Johansson, Katya Rudenko, Abigail Lunzmann and Nunn posted a time of 1:30.95 to finish just behind Queens’ winning and NCAA-II record-setting time of 1:30.05. On Wednesday night, the two teams were separated by 0.03 seconds in the 200 medley relay.

Erica Dahlgren came in ninth in the 200 freestyle. The sophomore from Sweden swam the event in 1:49.63.

Drury’s 400 medley relay team that won the Great Lakes Valley Conference title and had three of four members returning from a unit that finished second in the nation last year was disqualified in tonight’s finals. The Panthers owned the top time from this morning’s preliminary trials.

The Drury men’s team had a third place, and a ninth place finish in the 200 freestyle. Joan Casanovas finished third with a time of 1:36.01 while Alex Reinbrecht came in ninth (1:37.63).

Freshman Pavel Semochkin came in third in the 100 butterfly. The St. Petersburg, Russia native had a time fo 47.19.

Young Tae Seo (tay, say-oh) finished seventh in the 400 individual medley. He completed the event in 3:54.44.

The Drury men’s team took a hit in the standings as they failed to place in either of Thursday’s relay events. The Panthers did not qualify for the finals out of this morning’s preliminary heats in the 200 freestyle relay, and Drury was disqualified in the 400 medley relay.

The 2018 NCAA-II men’s and women’s swimming & diving national championship continues on Friday with time trials at 9 a.m. (Central) and finals at 5 p.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
