If you have played him, you know his name.

“We just scrimmaged Coach (Anthony) Hays with the Branson Pirates. He (said) ‘coach, I want your linebacker.’ I said ‘you can’t have him’,” Mt. Vernon head coach Tom Cox said.

The name is Will Boswell.

“The thing that I caution him about is trying to do too much,” Cox said.

The reigning Class 3 Defensive Player of the Year is returning to Mt. Vernon hungry for more success.

“I want to go back to state and I want to win it this time,” Boswell said.

And more tackles.

“We expect even bigger and better, which is maybe a little bit unfair,” Cox said.

Boswell brought down 240 tackles last year, which is second most in a single season MSHSAA history.

“I know he wants to break that (record) and get into that No. 1 (spot),” Cox said.

He is also going to get some offensive touches.

“Will can run the ball really well. I wouldn’t want to tackle him,” Cox said. “We have to be careful because he is so valuable on defense that we don’t want to get him banged up offensively.”

People know about Will Boswell.

“We hear chatter. We know that people are going to be scheming for him,” Cox said. “That just puts more pressure on everybody else around him.”

Boswell is unique.

“He got into a deal this summer where he tried to get the whole team to start growing mustaches. There were some really, really bad mustaches,” Cox said.

Don’t let all of this fool you. Will is ready to play.

“He just does kind of crazy things like that, but when he steps on the field it is all business,” Cox said. “He has learned a lot from that state championship game; just with film study and (he) is another year older and wiser.”
