Reeds Spring has a weapon on their softball team. Izzy Erickson had big shoes to fill last season. Her older sister graduated, and she took over as the Wolves’ go-to pitcher. Erickson was only a sophomore, but she was ready to fill the role.
“I had to kind of step up and kind of put on my big boy pants and get everything done,” said Erickson.
She was lights-out, throwing 185 Ks in 117 IP with a 1.44 ERA. And, she was just at solid at the plate batting .570 with 29 RBIs.
“It kind of felt like all of my hard work kind of paid off that year. I felt like results were actually showing,” said Erickson.
She had a great season that unfortunately ended in an injury.
“It was an ongoing thing. At one point I was like oh my shoulder kind of hurts, and it kept getting worse and worse. By the time of districts I literally came out of one inning just in tears and was like I can’t pitch anymore,” Erickson said.
She had bicep tendinitis, and rotator cuff impingement. She went through rehab and was cleared for this season, but head coach Scott Walker said he was still unsure how things would play out.
“There was a little concern that there’d be an issue – until I saw her throw, and the first time I saw her throw I thought, shoot she’s throwing better than she did last year,” said Walker.
In about half the innings that she pitched last year, Izzy has nearly reached the amount of strikeouts she had last season. On top of that she’s creeping up on the school home run record.
