Glendale swimmer Andrew McIllwain is a man a few words.
“Here I’m just focused on the race I’m about to do,” said McIllwain.
Frankly, he probably doesn’t have the time for it. McIllwain is a three-activity student athlete at Glendale, which seems common enough, but all of his activities take place in the fall.
“I’m in the Glendale marching band, I’m in cross-country, and I’m in swim,” said Andrew. “I have a calendar with all my stuff on it, and I kind of just pick and choose the stuff for that day.”
It’s all about balance, and Andrew’s coaches work together for his best interest.
“We’ve had a few times where I’ve tried to give him a little bit of rest, but he doesn’t really want that. He wants to be here,” said Glendale swim coach Steve Boyce. “The cross-country coach and I get along great. We’re working on making sure we balance and we don’t crush him. Maybe he’s going to turn into a triathlete down the road, so we’ll see what we can do.”
