FAYETTE, Mo. — Seven turnovers by the No. 9 Evangel football team doomed the Crusaders in a 42-7 upset at Central Methodist on Saturday.
The Crusaders fell behind early as the Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of turnovers.
Evangel would get a turnover of its own when Sam Morton picked off a CMU pass and put the Crusaders inside the 5-yard line. Darrius Lee would punch it in from 1-yard out to put the Crusaders on the board at 14-7.
Central Methodist would go on to score two more times before halftime building a 28-7 lead.
The Crusaders finished with just over 200 yards of total offense, while the Eagles tallied 324 yards of offense with 194 yards coming through the air.
In the end it was four fumbles and three interceptions that proved too much for Evangel to overcome.
Will Boswell led the defense with 13 tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss, while Sam Morton finished with 12 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss and an interception.
Evangel will head to Baker next Saturday, still with a shot at sharing the Heart South Championship.
