Verona finished 18-9 overall last year with a 5-1 record in conference. If the Lady Wildcats are to repeat that performance, they will need to replace an all-time program great in Twilah Carrasquillo.
“She meant everything to our program the last four years,” Verona head coach Brandon Weiss said. “She is the school’s all-time leading scorer. She was close to having a 1000 rebounds in her career. She led us in most statistical categories. We have big shoes to fill. Twilah’s absence won’t be filled by one person but by the whole team having to pick it up where she left off.”
Three starters do return for Verona in senior Carolina Castillo along with juniors Paige Bauer and Sydney Gamroth. Bauer is the top returning scorer (10 ppg), rebounder (4.3 rpg) and assists (2.5 apg). Castillo and Gamroth both average right around three points per game.

Senior Ashley Freiburger, junior Courtney Freiburger and sophomore Yoselin Martinez all are returning letter winners for Verona.
“We lost a lot to graduation. With their departures we will count heavily on our returning starters and lettermen. They will need to pick up the pieces from the departures of those girls,” Weiss said. “Offensively we will want to play a style of ball that gets us up and down. With the experience that we have back, we will be able to play at a quicker pace. We are going to have to become a better defensive team. We will play multiple defenses. Man-to-man will be our primary defense with us trapping full and half court.”
Verona opens the season on Nov. 22 at home against Spokane.
