“My life was changed by coaches pouring their life into me when I was young,” said Lighthouse Christian’s new head football coach Brett Williams. And little did he know, his coaches would affect his whole life.
“It was always a dream of mine to play college football. I got recruited by Bobby Bowden, and got there and loved it,” Williams said.
The Chargers’ new football coach has quite the resume. Williams was a four-year starter on the offensive line at Florida State. From there, he was selected in the 4th round of the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2003.

“Playing for the Chiefs was kind of like a dream, because you grow up watching Priest Holmes and Tony Gonzales and all of these big-name guys, and next thing you know you’re sitting in the locker room next to them,” Williams said. “It was kind of like pinching yourself. It was a great experience. Getting to play on the field against guys you watched on TV, it was surreal.”
The dream was quickly interrupted after a career ending injury at the start of his third NFL season. And these days, it’s not the roar of the crowd that keeps him motivated.

“I’ve found that life is more rewarding when you’re giving what you know to other people. I think we all come alive doing that,” Williams said.
For the last 7-to-8 years, Brett Williams has been coaching high school football — Hoping to do for his players, as his past coaches have done for him.
“Seeing the impact that the coaches at Florida State had on my life kind of inspired me to want to do the same. I don’t want to do it at the college level, because I’ve got five kids and they’re traveling all over the place, so, coaching the Chargers fits me perfect,” said Williams.

From playing football at the highest level, to coaching a home school team in Springfield, Missouri, Brett Williams wouldn’t have it any other way.
