There’s no denying that 2020 has been a special season for Lebanon soccer.
“We’re setting records that nobody has come close to, so it’s a very special group,” said Head Coach Matt Jernigan.
For the first time in program history, the Yellowjackets are district champs.
“We had a chance last year, it was our first time ever in program history making it to the district championship,” Jernigan said.
It’s no coincidence these two years have lined up with two record-setting seasons by senior Zach Richards.
“If you look at the records, he’s by far the best to ever come through Lebanon,” Jernigan said. “He’s a special player.”
Last year, Zach broke the Jackets single season goal scoring record. Early this year, he set the program’s career record.
“Honestly I did not even realize I got the school record until coach told me, but it was awesome,” Zach said.
His success is in part because of his blazing speed.
“He’s a 4.4 40 [yard dash] kind of guy. He timed the fastest in our school a couple years ago in the 40-yard dash,” Jernigan said.
But Zach brings more to the table, looking to set up his teammates while also adding to his school record.
“I definitely don’t just try to get goals,” Zach said. “I definitely want to pass it and let the team play too, but it’s always in the back of my mind trying to get more and more.”
Fittingly, Zach added three more by scoring a hat trick in the Jackets district championship win.
And he’ll carry that mentality with him as he moves on to play college soccer. However, he’s not ready for that next adventure quite yet.
“I’ve just been trying to enjoy the last few weeks with the boys,” Zach said. “I’m still going to see them after the season, but it’s not going to be the same. We won’t be able to play soccer together anymore.”
That’s true, but at least Zach and his teammates will have record-setting memories to look back on.
