The McDonald County Mustangs finished 5-19 overall in coach Brandon Joines’ first season. Expect that to improve entering Year Two.
“We are much more confident in the offensive system and the guys know the expectations following last year’s transitional season,” Joines said. “Our junior and sophomore groups are poised to step into leadership roles with some key senior guidance.”
Seniors Jackson Clarkson (1.5 ppg) and Irael Marcos (2.6 ppg, 2 rpg) bring energy and experience to leadership roles. Junior guards Pierce Harmon (9 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.3 apg) and Cole Martin (6 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 4 apg, 1.8 spg) bring varsity experience and defensive energy that can lead into scoring in transition. Fellow junior Teddy Reedybacon (5.7 ppg, 6 rpg) presents matchup problems down low with his length.
“We had limited contact opportunities this summer, but the time we had showed how many have matured in their play. Specific offseason improvement is difficult to gauge this year,” Joines said.

Junior forward Garrett Gricks (1.3 ppg) and sophomore guard Cross Dowd (3.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg) return as well.
Sophomore Sterling Woods and junior Eli McClain will be newcomers to watch.
“Sterling Woods can facilitate our offense and provide a spark while getting acclimated to the varsity level,” Joines said. “Eli McClain brings a calm demeanor and basketball smarts to the floor.”
McDonald County opens the season on Nov. 24 at Joplin.
“We have the potential to take big steps forward this season as compared to the previous two, and our coaching staff expects major defensive adjustments and effort to decrease the scoring and rebounding numbers of our opponents,” Joines said. “Our guards have the experience to limit our turnovers, and possess the basketball IQ to put teammates in positions to be successful. We pair that with our grit and length inside to make us difficult to defend and versatile on both ends of the floor. We expect to be aggressive on both ends of the floor and bring toughness to every game.”
