Laquey boys basketball has a new head coach in Steve Scholfield this year. He is looking to make Laquey into a consistent winner after the Hornets have had just one winning season in the past decade.

First-team all-conference selection Jason Young returns to lead the team in his senior season. He averaged 15 points and 7 rebounds per game last year.

He will be one of the key leaders along with classmate Jayden Bell. Bell ran the point last year, and Scholfield expects him to be one of the most improved players in the Frisco League.

Sophomore Gauge Fleschute has grown an inch or two in the off-season to get to 6’1. He has made big strides in the off-season.

The sophomore trio of Sam Swihart, Mason Shaw and JD Bowling all saw action last year on the varsity level.

Seniors Nathan Fowers and Dominick Jiminez along with sophomores Brock Denny and Colton Wallender will be new players to watch on the varsity level. Fowers started two years ago before moving to Texas last year. Jiminez is playing for the first time as a senior.

“We have a lot of quickness and should be able to extend the floor on both offense and defense,” Scholfield said. “(We) will be able to play 8-10 players a night.”

Laquey opens the season on Dec. 1 against Richland in the Frisco League Tournament.

“(We) might start a little slow, as this is my first year,” Schofield said. “(We are running a) completely different system. I think we will be competitive every night. Hopefully we will be able to compete for the district by the end of the season.”
