East Newton escapes Ava to advance to first state quarterfinal

East Newton escaped Ava with a 36-34 victory to advance to the program’s first quarterfinal.
The game was close throughout with Ava taking a 9-8 lead after one quarter before entering halftime tied at 18. East Newton got some breathing room out of the break with a 9-5 advantage in the third quarter on the way to a 27-23 advantage going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Ava battled back, but East Newton was able to keep the Bears at arm’s length. With 38.9 seconds left, Ava hit a three pointer to cut the East Newton lead to 35-34. Ava got the ball back with 12.7 seconds left still down by one. The Bears were unable to convert on offense and gave the ball back to East Newton. Connor Killion went to the line for East Newton with 2.8 seconds left. He hit his first and missed his second. Ava’s desperation attempt at the final buzzer failed and the celebration for East Newton commenced.
Lucas Kimbrough (23) led East Newton with 12 points. He accounted for eight of East Newton’s 18 second-half points.
Ava was led by Andrew Dalton’s (44) game-high 18 points.
East Newton (26-2) will play in its first state quarterfinal at home at 6 pm on Friday against Blair Oaks (23-4). Blair Oaks is no stranger to the state quarterfinals, as this will be the third consecutive trip to the quarters for the Falcons.
