There will be a lot of unknowns entering the season for Diamond softball after losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Everyone is in the same boat. It is just strange. We really don’t have a clear idea where we rank or what we will face because these girls have grown so much in the two years. Luckily, some of my girls still got summer ball in and we got some time on the field this summer to start figuring out where we need to work most,” Diamond head coach Kelsey Parrish said. “We are excited (for the season). I think taking a season away from you really makes you appreciate it more.”

Senior outfield Grace Irwin along with juniors Madison Bentley (pitcher), Lexy Bridges (utility) and Leslie Watson (second base) all return with a good amount of game experience.

Bentley will be a key piece after earning all-state honors in the circle as a freshman.

“We are excited to see what statement she (Bentley) can make,” Parrish said. “She had an outstanding season her freshman year and really stepped up for us. We lost in the district championship and it has been great motivation for her in the off season. I’m excited to see what damage she can do.”

Sophomore Piper Brewer and freshman Caitlyn Suhrie will also see time in the circle.

Freshman Grace Frazier saw a lot of time behind the plate at catcher in the summer and should see time there for the varsity season.

Bridges and Watson will both see time in the infield along with sophomore Emille Shallenburger.

Pitching will be a key strength for Diamond.

“I would say having Madison on the mound will bring strength to our defense. I think she earns that respect making All-State as a freshman. Offensively we are adding a lot of new bats to our lineup, however the returning players did really well for us in the 2019 season. Our team’s relationship is a huge strength, our girls are motivated and eager to work. Some might not see that as a strength but I personally believe a team’s relationship can make or break a team,” Parrish said. “We have a lot of new players this year filling big spots. The inexperience is something we will just have to work and grow with.”

Diamond opens the season Mar. 19-20 at the Sarcoxie Tournament.
