Greenwood girls soccer is ready to chase the program’s first winning season since 2012 with a highly motivated team returning.
“Losing the whole season to COVID last year was really hard on the girls. I know the graduated seniors were really upset by missing their last season. For the rest of the girls, it has been a humbling and motivating factor. Now these current seniors understand just how fragile their last season is; the girls are motivated and ready to get this season up and running,” Greenwood head coach Shelby Stezer said.
Mallory Montgomery (senior), Abigail Heidemann (senior), Sam Scott (senior), Annabelle Sonnemaker (junior), and Elise Dlabach (junior) will be team leaders.
Sonnemaker and Heidemann will be the key players up top at forward. Scott and junior Reagan Rosen will be in the midfield. Montgomery and sophomore Tess Fowler will be defenders.

Senior Shield Bartee and Elise Dlabach will be the goalkeepers.
“Our strengths will lie in our comradery; our girls have been through a lot the past year and it has brought them closer together. We have new faces that will add to our depth, as well as the sophomores who did not get to play their freshmen year,” Setzer said. “Our team will be a bit young this year, and since the current sophomores did not have a season last year, it is almost as if we have two classes of freshmen in regards to experience. So getting that game experience will be crucial for us this year.”
Greenwood opens the season on Mar. 30 at Willard.
“As any coach will say, our expectations are to have a winning season. I would love to see this, but more so I would love to see each of my girls improve and grow throughout the season,” Setzer said.
