Marshfield sophomore Marlene Edgeman made history on Tuesday by becoming Marshfield’s first ever state golf champion. Edgeman was strong throughout shooting a 72 on Monday and a 79 on Tuesday for a total of 151. That was good enough for a four-stroke win.

“It means a lot. I am the first golfer to win state. I still can’t believe I won state. I am really excited and happy,” Edgeman said.

Edgeman posted the top score of round one while posting the No. 2 overall score in Round 2. She has been building to this point as she got stronger throughout the season.

“Towards the end of the season she was getting better and better and playing her best golf. Definitely going in I knew she had a good shot. She was confident going in and that played to her benefit for sure,” Marshfield head coach Cheratin Hunter said.

“I was preparing myself this whole season. Mentally I was practicing and making sure I could do each shot, so mentally I could be confident in my swing and be confident in my golf game,” Edgeman said.

Edgeman was familiar with the course coming in after playing a practice round earlier this season.

“She like the layout of the course going in. She played a practice round previously this year. The course in general fit her really well,” Hunter said.

Hunter hopes this championship serves as not only a launching pad for another state title run from Edgeman next year, but also to help build the program.

“It is still kind of hard to believe. I think she has been a huge asset to the program, and so many people have watched her and looked up to her,” Hunter said. “I definitely think this is going to put us on the map. Girls younger than her are going to want to do the same. I am pretty excited to see where that goes.”

Nevada’s Emree Cameron finished in fourth place. Cassville’s Avery Chappell tied for 10th to round out the area’s top 20 finishers.
