Golden City girls basketball is poised for a big season with three all-conference selections returning from last season’s team that finished as a district runner-up with a 16-9 record.

Leading that group of returning players are junior Kyndall Scott (guard) and senior Brooke Beerly (guard). Scott, a first-team all-conference selection last year, averaged 15.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.4 steals per game last year. Beerly, a second-team all-conference selection, averaged 12.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game last year.

“These two set the example of what it means to be a Golden City Eagle girls basketball player,” Golden City head coach Derek Judd said. “They come to practice every day ready to work and make everyone around them better. They are good students and they represent our school well.”

Junior Ahree Lutes is the third returning all-conference selection. She was honorable mention all-conference after she scored 5.1 points and pulled down 10.2 rebounds per game.

“Ahree is our best rebounder and plays with a non-stop motor,” Judd said. “She can cover a lot of ground on the defensive end and has a knack for offensive rebounds.”

Junior Maggie Reed (forward) and sophomores Kylee Scott (guard) and Sienna Wirth (forward) also return for Golden City.

Judd on Scott: “Kylee brings toughness to our team. She’s always asked to guard the other team’s best player and makes that a point of pride for herself. She’s a secondary ball handler for us as well and is a very good catch and shoot player.”
Judd on Reed: “Maggie made a big jump last season, and we see her making another big jump this season. She has become one of the best help defenders on the team and provides us with spacing on offense.”
Judd on Wirth: “Sienna comes off the bench and provides us with reliable floor spacing. She had several games last year when opposing defenses had to account for her.”

Freshmen Elizabeth Renfro and Trya Menadue are expected to make an immediate varsity impact.

“Our goal is to be a lockdown defensive team,” Judd said. “We have the makeup to be very good on that end of the floor and we are looking to make it a point of pride and our identity.”

Golden City will travel to Rich Hill for a jamboree on Nov. 15 with Archie and Sheldon. The Eagles open the regular season on Nov. 23 at home against Jasper.

“We have very high expectations for the girls this season,” Judd said. “We made it to the district championship game last year and losing put a bad taste in our mouths over the summer. The girls showed up every day we asked them to and worked hard to fix the areas we needed to improve in. The goal we have set as a team is to win conference and districts this year.”
