It’s hard to think of New Covenant Swimming without thinking of the Moore Sisters.
Molly Moore set the standard a few years back before going on to swim in the SEC, and now Maggie Moore is having a record-breaking career at NCA. Swimming fast runs in the Moore family.
“I started swimming at a young age. My family’s always been in the swimming world, my mom swam at Drury, my sister swims at Arkansas and I just grew up loving it,” Maggie Moore said.
Through the years Maggie’s love for the sport has grown, and for her, it’s the little things that make it special, “Feeling the adrenaline pumping through your veins when you stand behind the blocks it’s like ‘this is my moment, I can give it all or nothing.’ To choose to give it all is just a different feeling,” the New Covenant Senior added.
Maggie’s all-in mentality has earned her five state titles, she’s been first three times in the 100-yard backstroke, and twice in the 50-yard freestyle.
This success comes as no surprise to her coach, “Maggie likes to work hard, and she wants to get better. She works hard and constantly wants feedback and she wants to know ‘what can I do to get better, to get stronger, get faster?’” New Covenant Swim Coach Alex Miller said.
The handful of titles is the most by any swimmer in NCA history, but there are a few records she doesn’t have, but they’re still in the family under her sister name.
“She set the bar pretty high, but my goal is to try and get as close as I can if not beat them,” said Maggie.
But being a record holder, or record chaser, comes with a pressure of its own. Something Maggie balances as she prepares for her last state meet.
“Senior year it’s been good, it’s been stressful. I’m trying to slow down and try and take it in and not rush too far ahead.” Maggie continued, “I’ve been really trying to just focus on myself and not think too much about other people and what their times are because I know that if I go my fastest times and that’s all I can do, and if the people next to me beat me then I will be happy for them and that’s what I want to do.”
As the water settles, there’s no doubt Maggie has made a splash during her time at NCA.
“She will certainly go down as one of the most dominant single athletes that Southwest Missouri has ever had in the pool,” Miller said.
