The Licking Lady Wildcats won Class 3 District 10 last weekend and leading the way this season is junior Abbie Sullins.
Basketball runs in the Sullins family.
“My dad loves basketball. I started playing around second grade and as soon as I started playing I loved it so I never quit,” Abbie said.
That love led Abbie to be a three-year starter for the Lady Wildcats.
This year, Abbie is the team’s leading scorer as a junior.
“She’s big, she’s 5’11”, she’s left-handed and she can shoot from three and post up also. We just try to put her in situations where she has an advantage. If you guard her with a post we put her on the perimeter, if you guard her with a guard we put her in the post so she’s just a matchup nightmare.” said Licking Girls’ Basketball coach Steven Rissler.
Her versatility opens the gate for the Lady Wildcats to do almost anything on the court.
“It gives us so many options of what we can do offensively and defensively. We can go big or we can go small, we can play fast or we can play slow,” Rissler added.
Sullins is nearing 1,000 career points, but even when she doesn’t lead the team on the scoreboard she shows up in the big moments. Such as in the district championship game.
“Down the stretch we got down three and she made her first bucket of the night to tie it up and she waits for the big moment,” said Rissler.
It always helps when you’re playing your favorite sport with your favorite people.
“This year has by far been the most fun. These girls I’ve grown up playing with them my whole life. My dad coached our little league team my whole life so this year I knew it would be really fun,” said Abbie.
